Preparation/marking

A perfectly clean steel surface is required for the hot dip galvanizing process.

Excess grease, oil or lacquer on the steel surface must be removed prior to galvanizing usually by shot blasting.  See our Guide to Preparation/marking.

Also, fabricators often mark their steel with their own language of hieroglyphics and codes.  This should be done using chalk or a galvanizing friendly marker which are easily removed by your galvanizer’s pre-treatment acids.  Any crayons, paint or solvent based markers used will create areas on your steel that will not be galvanized.
